Russia conducted a significant assault on Ukraine overnight, launching over 500 drones and missiles, according to Ukraine's air force. The attack occurred early Wednesday morning, with explosions reported in various western regions of Ukraine, prompting NATO aircraft to scramble in Poland.

The Ukrainian air force reported that 502 attack and decoy drones, along with 24 missiles, were deployed in the latest barrage. Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepted or suppressed 430 drones and 21 missiles. However, impacts from 69 drones and three missiles were recorded across 14 locations, with debris from downed munitions also reported in those areas.

Local authorities indicated that the strikes targeted several regions, including Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Lutsk. In Kyiv, at least one drone crashed, according to Tymur Tkachenko, the head of the city administration. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that 15 Russian drones attacked the city, which is approximately 40 miles from the Polish border. He noted that a warehouse was "partially destroyed," but there were no casualties.

In Lutsk, Mayor Ihor Polishchuk stated that drones caused damage to civilian infrastructure. Svitlana Onyshchuk, head of the Ivano-Frankivsk military administration, reported a fire at an industrial site due to the attacks, requiring the deployment of 130 emergency personnel, though no casualties were reported.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the "massive attack," stating it targeted civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities and residential areas. He described the strikes as "demonstrative Russian strikes" and criticized Russian President Vladimir Putin for showing "impunity." Zelenskyy attributed the ongoing aggression to insufficient pressure on Russia's war economy.

In response to the attacks, NATO aircraft were deployed in Poland. The Polish Armed Forces Operational Command announced that aircraft were sent to monitor the situation following the Russian strikes on Ukrainian facilities. They reported that Polish and allied aircraft were operating intensively, and ground-based air defense systems were at maximum readiness. After about four hours, NATO forces in Poland returned to a normal state of readiness.

Despite U.S.-led peace efforts, Russia continues its nightly assaults on Ukraine. Although there was a decrease in attacks in August compared to July, the weeks following a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Putin saw a resurgence in the scale of strikes across Ukraine. Notably, a drone and missile barrage on Kyiv on August 27-28 resulted in at least 23 fatalities.

Zelenskyy remarked that the ongoing attacks reflect Russia's "open disregard" for international efforts to halt the conflict. Meanwhile, Ukraine is intensifying its own long-range strike campaign into Russia. The Russian Defense Ministry reported that its forces shot down at least 105 Ukrainian drones overnight. Zelenskyy announced plans to expand Ukraine's strike capabilities, stating, "We are preparing a technological headquarters involving manufacturers of Ukrainian missiles, key types of drones and air defense tools." He emphasized the intention to increase the production of strike means.
