An 8-year-old boy from Pinecrest is recovering after being bitten by a shark while snorkeling with his father and sister off Key Largo on Labor Day, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and a family spokesperson.

The boy, identified as Richard Burrows, was attacked shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday near the Garden Cove Marina.

CBS News Miami has learned that the child's father, David Burrows, made the 911 call after the incident.

According to the Burrows family, "a black tip shark rushed the trio and bit Richard on his right knee."

A nearby boater heard the distress call over the radio and helped the family get to shore while someone called 911.
