CENTRAL CITY—Members of the Salt Lake City Board of Education voted Tuesday to appoint Ann Elizabeth Romano to the board’s precinct 5 seat, filling a vacancy that followed the August 5 resignation of Mohamed Baayd.

Baayd stepped down from the board after reaching a plea deal related to charges of attempted election bribery. During Tuesday’s meeting, current board members expressed concern for the constituents of precinct 5—which includes 9th and 9th, Liberty Wells, Ballpark and a portion of Glendale—and noted a feeling of betrayal after Baayd’s unexpected departure. They said they hoped to find a replacement who could connect with the community and regain trust.
