A driver in San Jose struck and killed a pedestrian in a wheelchair early Sunday morning then fled the scene before he was arrested, the police department said Wednesday.

At about 2:34 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian in a wheelchair in the area of Hayes Avenue and Lily Ann Way in South San Jose, police said.

The preliminary investigation shows a 2017 silver Mercedes sedan, driven by an undentified man was traveling northbound on Lily Ann Way at the intersection of Hayes Avenue when it struck a man in a wheelchair on the north curb of Hayes Avenue, police said. The vehicle then plowed into an iron fence.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he later died, police said.
