STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Scams and car-related thefts were hot topics at a “Coffee With a Cop” pop-up event on Wednesday morning in New Dorp.

Crime Prevention Officer Anthony Robles and Community Affairs Officer Mario Mazier offered free coffee, baked treats and safety tips to Staten Islanders. Members of the New Dorp Beach Friendship Club were among those who participated in the event, which was held in the 122nd Precinct at Paris Baguette at 2742 Hylan Blvd. in Tysens Park Shopping Center.

Police are seeing a slight uptick in what’s commonly referred to as the jewelry scam. Seniors are often targeted on the sidewalk and scammers sometimes use children as a distraction while they move in close to swap fake jewelry for the victim’s real bling.
