Two Northern Virginia school districts made their legal arguments in federal court Wednesday in their lawsuit against the Department of Education. At the heart of this case is the debate on which restrooms transgender students may use.

The Trump administration is withholding federal money from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William’s Counties and Alexandria because the districts allow students to use restrooms based on their gender identity.

A lawsuit filed by Arlington and Fairfax County school boards is asking the court to intervene.

For the moment, nothing changes — a U.S. District Court judge heard arguments Wednesday and says he hopes to issue an opinion by Friday.
