LANSING — A bipartisan group of Michigan officials are backing new proposals that they say would help support survivors of human trafficking.

The effort is spearheaded by Attorney General Dana Nessel and a bipartisan group of Michigan lawmakers, including state Senator John Damoose.

“Today’s legislation is a step in the right direction to make Michigan the last place on earth anyone would want to be involved in either sex trafficking or labor trafficking,” said Damoose, (R) District 37, Harbor Springs.

Among other policies, the package would give survivors new legal defenses if they commit a crime as a consequence of being trafficked.

The proposals would also allow some trafficking survivors to have their convictions set aside and increase fines for trafficking offenses.
