A Eugene man is dead after drowning in the Willamette River near Clearwater Landing on the afternoon of Aug. 31.
According to the Lane County Sheriff's Office, first responders arrived at the scene around 2 p.m. after receiving reports that a man fell off his inner tube while floating down the river and did not resurface.
A Eugene Springfield Fire Department rescue team located the man, identified as 67-year-old Luke John Poulin, underwater.
Poulin was brought to the surface and medics attempted life-saving measures, but he was declared dead at the scene.
Poulin was wearing a life jacket but was caught in branches under the surface of the water, according to sheriff's office officials.
This incident is one of several drownings or near-drownings that have occurred in the Willamette Riv
