Lake Michigan is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Midwest. Stretching 321 miles across four U.S. states, it’s known for its sandy beaches and outdoor recreation opportunities.
But beyond its reputation as a fun-filled travel destination, the lake has a more mysterious side. According to a news report from WTTW , there are anywhere between 600 and 1,500 shipwrecks beneath its surface, with countless more likely still undiscovered.
The most recent discovery is a clear example. Just below the surface, archaeologists identified a shipwreck that had gone missing for more than a century. Here’s how the vessel was discovered and what researchers have planned for this newly-found historical site.
