SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - South Dakota lawmakers continue to review the future of the South Dakota Department of Corrections, following the resignation of Secretary of Corrections Kellie Wasko.

Governor Rhoden’s announcement of Wasko’s resignation may have come as a surprise to some, but it wasn’t a surprise to the 19 lawmakers who signed a joint letter to the Governor asking that she no longer be a part of the institution.

With the roller coaster of prison construction locations and costs freshly on the mind of Rep. Taylor Rehfeldt, she hopes for additional changes.

Rep. Liz May believes there are many unanswered questions, including planning, funding, overcrowding, and operations. Mat said it is an issue of trust and accountability.
