A group of political activist and organizers has until early October to gather nearly 1,000 signatures as they pursue a petition to recall District 2 Lubbock City Councilman Gordon Harris .

On Wednesday, Lubbock City Secretary Courtney Paz confirmed to the Avalanche-Journal that an organization has started the process to recall Harris, who is just over a year into his term and who just over a decade ago led a series of petition efforts in failed attempts to recall one of his predecessors.

According to Paz, the group — Recall Gordon Harris — has until Oct. 2 to gather 961 valid petition signatures to initiate the recall process formally. The number of valid signatures from registered voters in the district required to initiate a recall process is based on a percentage of the number
