CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - The City of Charleston is working to find the best course of action for the Coming Street Commons project, a plan that would add 1,200 student beds on the site of the former YWCA and Potter's Field.

The plan has been controversial as many enslaved Africans and indigenous people are believed to be buried at the field. Because of this, the City of Charleston's Commission on History is taking the next few weeks to understand as much as they can about this redevelopment.

"I think as we learn more about this burial ground and the challenges that it presents for design and for learning in future history and historic preservation, we'll find that we have something very unique in Charleston and that can teach the world," Fraser said.
