DES MOINES, Iowa —
In Iowa, students who have to register as sex offenders still have the right to education by law. According Iowa Code 282.9 , school districts are required to determine the educational placement of a resident student who is required to be on the sex offender registry.
“It happens fairly regularly throughout the state,” said Matt Carver, the legal services director for the School Administrators of Iowa. “So it happens not only in urban areas, but in our rural areas as well.”
Carver says that by Iowa law and because of the importance of situations like this, school administrators and board members take this matter seriously.
