The New Bedford Whaling Museum will host a special event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Cape Verdean independence. The First Friday event is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 and will feature the KabuJazz Ensemble, led by vocalist Candida Rose Baptista, according to a community announcement.

The evening will blend Cabo Verdean rhythms with American jazz, offering a unique cultural experience. The KabuJazz Ensemble aims to honor the legacy and resilience of the Cabo Verdean people through music.

The program aligns with two of the museum's current exhibitions, Morabeza and Claridade. These exhibitions showcase the stories of Cape Verdean Americans in New Bedford through contemporary art, oral histories, photographs and personal narratives.
