Heavy rains continued to lash several parts of northern India, triggering floods and disrupting lives and livelihoods with extensive damage reported to crops and livestock borders areas with Pakistan.

Torrential rains have led to increasing water level in the rivers in Jammu region.

The ongoing annual Hindu pilgrimage to a mountainous shrine at an altitude of 3,000 meters (9,500 feet) remained suspended as the base camp at Katra saw heavy rainfall during the past 24 hours.

At least 125 people were killed and scores injured in the flood-related disasters in Indian-controlled Kashmir last month.

In New Delhi, water levels of the Yamuna River, which originates in the Himalayas, crossed the danger mark on Tuesday, posing a threat of flooding in low-lying areas of the city. 

Waterlogged roads triggered severe traffic disruptions.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast that India is likely to receive above average rainfall in September and has warned that heavy rainfall may trigger more landslides and flash floods in some northern states.

Heavy monsoon rains have resulted in a series of disasters in South Asia in the last few months.
