Two women were fatally struck by a vehicle on the Hume Freeway in Melbourne's northern area while they were trying to help an injured animal. The incident occurred at Craigieburn just after 7:30 p.m. on a recent evening.

One of the victims, a 30-year-old woman from Beveridge, died at the scene. The second woman, also 30 years old and from Thomastown, was transported to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the women remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. The circumstances surrounding the collision are currently under investigation.

According to Victoria Police, there have been 203 road fatalities in the state this year, which is an increase of 11 compared to the same period last year.
