For Tasmanian woman Leander Howlett, a home care package for her ailing husband Henry cannot come soon enough.

And the wait has been agonisingly long so far.

The federal government this week announced that it would immediately fund 20,000 home care packages that were intended to be released slightly later after bowing to pressure from the Coalition, Greens and some independents.

Mrs Howlett was told in February that her husband's home care package would be fast-tracked due to his complex needs.

The latest information the couple has received indicates that the wait would be at least 12 months now.

Mr Howlett has been in and out of the hospital during this time for treatment related to stroke, dementia, and various other conditions.
