While Tasmanian governments have traditionally favoured a 'just say no' approach to pill testing at festivals in the state, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners believes there is hope for different thinking in a new progressive parliament.

But the Liberal government remains firm in its opposition to trial testing in Tasmania, which means any hope for it to progress will rely on pressure from the opposition and the crossbench.

RACGP state president Toby Gardner said the ACT now had a fixed site for substance testing at festivals, and Queensland and Victoria would undertake testing trials.

He said NSW had also committed to a 12-month mobile testing trial, and it was time for Tasmania to follow these other states.
