It was one of the most anticipated blockbusters to start an AFL finals series in recent years, with added emotion in the fallout from the Izak Rankine saga.

But the targeted booing of Isaac Quaynor was another ugly reminder of how tone deaf the AFL community can be, and a step backwards in dealing with homophobia.
