The earthquake shook about three miles east of Narragansett

Light sleepers and night owls might have felt a tremor overnight, as a minor earthquake shook off the coast of Rhode Island on Sept. 4.

The 1.8 magnitude earthquake happened at 11:36 p.m. about three miles east southeast of Narragansett, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was about six miles deep. More: Did you feel the earth move? Rhode Islanders react to earthquake reports

The USGS received six reports from people who felt the rumble , four from Rhode Island and two from New York. Rhode Island reports came from Newport, Little Compton, Bristol and Wakefield. The New York reports came from Sea Cliff, which is about 125 miles away, and Hudson Falls, which is about 172 miles away.
