Belgian police officer Hugues Tasiaux, until recently head of the country’s anti-corruption unit, has been charged with breaching judicial secrecy, the Brussels prosecutor’s office confirmed on Friday.

"An investigation is underway into this individual, who has been charged with breach of professional secrecy," said Maryam Benayad, a spokesperson for the prosecutor's office.

Tasiaux oversaw operations in several high-profile cases, including the probe into alleged cash-for-influence schemes at the European Parliament, dubbed Qatargate .

The prosecutor’s office declined to say whether the charge against him was linked to complaints by Qatargate suspects alleging that confidential details of the investigation had been leaked to the press.
