Claiming the Alabama High School Athletic Association is improperly sidelining student-athletes who took part in the state’s new school choice program, Gov. Kay Ivey filed a temporary restraining order Friday to make the AHSAA allow those students to compete.

In 2024, the Alabama Legislature passed into law the Creating Hope and Opportunity for Our Students’ Education (CHOOSE) Act, which sets aside up to $7,000 in refundable income tax credits that families can use to cover the costs of their children’s education in private or home schools. More than 27,000 students applied to be part of the program earlier this year, along with 33 schools in Mobile and Baldwin counties.
