The body of a 19-year-old man remains missing after a drowning incident at Upper Thetis Lake in View Royal.

West Shore RCMP responded to a report of drowning Thursday (Sept. 5), shortly after 5 p.m.

“Witnesses reported seeing a 19-year-old man swimming in Upper Thetis Lake who went under the water and did not resurface,” said a RCMP statement. “Several bystanders attempted to assist but were unable to locate him.”

Police, BC Emergency Health Services, CRD Regional Parks staff and View Royal Fire Rescue attended the scene.

View Royal Fire deployed their boat, and emergency crews searched into the late evening hours.

Recovery efforts were suspended when daylight ran out.
