Some might consider Kilmar Abrego Garcia unlucky, but he is arguably the architect of his misfortune. Garcia has become symbolic for those opposing the Trump administration’s deportation efforts. It’s questionable whether he deserves this recognition given his alleged criminal history, but he should receive his day in court.
Mr. Garcia’s case has garnered worldwide attention because of the manner in which he was initially deported to El Salvador. He first came to the United States illegally in 2012. Garcia claimed he fled El Salvador, his native country, due to fear of gang extortion and persecution. He has lived in the United States since 2012.
