A 12-year-old boy from Lethbridge has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly stabbing his seven-year-old brother. The incident occurred on August 27 at their home in the city's north side.
Emergency services were called after the boys' father returned home and found the younger child in serious medical distress. The seven-year-old was transported by ambulance to Chinook Regional Hospital and later airlifted to Edmonton Children’s Hospital. He is currently in stable condition.
Initially, the 12-year-old told police that an unknown intruder had entered their home and attacked his brother. However, as the investigation progressed, authorities determined that there was no ongoing risk to the public.
During their search, police discovered a knife believed to be the weapon used in the stabbing. Evidence later indicated that the 12-year-old had repeatedly stabbed his brother and had fabricated the story about an intruder.
The boy has been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault. He is currently in custody and awaiting a bail hearing. Child and Family Services have been notified, and family members are receiving support from the Victim/Witness Services Unit. The investigation is ongoing.
