NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — A former UConn basketball player and his wife decided to open up a restaurant and drive-thru with healthy food after their son was diagnosed with diabetes.

Ray Allen, who played for the Huskies from 1993 to 1996, and his wife Shannon had their lives turned upside down years ago when their middle child, Walker, was diagnosed in a traumatic way at just 17 months old.

After excessive thirst, the couple wound up at a doctor in Los Angeles who took the baby's blood sugar, noting that it was at 639. A healthy blood sugar is supposed to be between 70 and 120.

Walker was in a phase of diabetes called ketoacidosis, meaning that his blood sugar was poisoning him to death. Without insulin, he could have died.

Walker is now 18 years old and thriving. For the last 10 years
