Max Grossman, a UTEP professor and outspoken critic of local government, has been arrested on a charge of family violence.

Grossman, who was a leading opponent of the proposed Downtown arena, was booked into the El Paso County Detention Center on Friday, Sept. 5, on the charge of assault causing bodily injury/family violence. His arrest stemmed from an alleged offense that occurred on Aug. 27.

Attorney Brian Kennedy is representing Grossman, court documents revealed. Grossman is currently an associate professor of art history at UTEP.

"This ridiculous charge is absolutely unfounded," Kennedy said in a statement. "Our concern is whether it is an action taken to pressure Mr. Grossman in a child custody issue. We intend to completely clear his name."
