Za’Darius Smith won't be coming back to the Detroit Lions .

The edge defender signed Friday, Sept. 5, with the Philadelphia Eagles , according to multiple reports and a social media post from Smith himself, after the Lions released him nearly six months ago .

The signing of Smith, who turns 33 on Sept. 8, leaves the Lions' edge rushers still lacking depth . Behind starters Aidan Hutchinson and Marcus Davenport, Al-Quadin Muhammad was the only backup who remained on the roster when it was pared down below the mandated 53-player maximum Aug. 26. The Lions then claimed Tyrus Wheat , an edge defender who appeared in 20 games for the Dallas Cowboys the past two seasons, off waivers.
