CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) -- The West Virginia Governor's Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is reminding drivers to follow the speed limit ahead of the upcoming high visibility enforcement (HVE) period.

According to a press release, the statewide HVE period will begin on Friday, September 5, 2025 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., continuing until Sunday, September 21, 2025.

Every year, thousands are killed or injured in speed-related accidents in the United States. In 2023, there were approximately 11,775 deaths that involved speeding, making up 29 percent of the year's traffic deaths; 88 percent of those happened on non-interstate roadways, the release stated. Motorcycle operators and riders between the ages of 21 to 24 made up the largest percentage of speeding involvement, accounting for 51 percent.
