With Canada’s unemployment rate hitting 7.1% according to Friday’s jobs report from StatsCan, Prime Minister Mark Carney promised action on the economy.

At a news conference at an industrial facility in Mississauga, Carney promised a new “Buy Canadian” policy for the federal government, a pause on the EV mandate, support for industries impacted by tariffs such as canola and auto, plus a jobs retraining program.

It’s Carney’s most ambitious plan of action yet, but it still contains a lot of promises for things down the road.

“If we want our economy to grow – with thriving careers at home and booming exports around the world – we must once again be a country that builds. That builds big. And builds fast,” Carney said.
