COLBERT COUNTY, Ala. (WHNT) — Deputy Briggs Wright was out on patrol Tuesday afternoon when he received what he thought was a normal 911 dispatch call.

“It stated that there was MVC, which is a motor vehicle crash. It was located in the 8,000 block of 6th street,” Wright said.

Wright said it was pouring rain, but he was trying to get to the call as fast as he could.

“I noticed a lot of flooding. I guess you could say over by the ditches,” Wright said.

Wright arrived at the scene, and an SUV was submerged in the water, with someone trapped inside.

“I looked to my right, I seen the vehicle, it was about 15 feet off the roadway, I heard screaming, I took off my duty belt, jumped in the water, she was a young woman, and she was screaming and said she couldn’t swim,” Wright said.
