KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — After 55 years, the high school football rivalry between Gate City and Dobyns-Bennett high schools is set to resume, reigniting a historic competition that began in 1969.
Friday night's matchup between the old rivals will be broadcast live on ABC Tri-Cities and stream live on WJHL.com and WJHL+.
The two teams, separated by a state line, first faced off in 1969, with Dobyns-Bennett claiming victory. Gate City responded with a win in 1970 and went on to secure a state championship.
"There was always that 'what if' Gate City played Dobyns-Bennett or vice versa," said former Gate City player Don Frazier. "And we never thought it would happen."
