ST. LOUIS — The League of Women Voters was barred on Friday from registering new U.S. citizens to vote in the Eagleton Courthouse downtown after a naturalization ceremony.

League leaders blamed a new policy from the administration of President Donald Trump, and said their volunteers had to stand on a sidewalk outside the building instead of manning tables just outside the courtroom.

The new policy, issued last week by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, allows only state and local election officials to offer voter registration services at the end of naturalization ceremonies. In the past, nongovernmental organizations such as the League also were allowed to.
