There are only two ship recycling operations in Canada and both are on the east coast but that could soon change as Port Alberni is being eyed as the location for a B.C.-based operation.
“There’s 900 vessels that need to be recycled on the coast, 90 of them are over 500 tons including 14 that are owned by BC Ferries, so we have to find solutions to deal with the imminent threat of these vessels that they pose on the environment,” said Courtenay-Alberni MP Gord Johns.
Ship breaking is currently being done in Union Bay by a company called Deep Water Recovery but the province says it’s been polluting Baynes Sound and cancelled its Crown lease which means the company can no longer access its upland operation.
