Homeless people moved from Petrie Plaza have been housed, according to one outreach organisation.

Minister for City and Government Services Tara Cheyne said on Thursday that "some [homeless] people would prefer whatever their lifestyle might be in that situation" and it was "not as simple as putting people into housing or into a hotel".

A homeless encampment in the city, located next to the Merry-Go-Round, was cleared on Wednesday, days before the 2025 Canberra Moon Festival.

One of the homeless people, Victoria, told The Canberra Times that about half a dozen people, including her partner and father-in-law, lived under permanent seats and tables.

The Canberra Times does not know if any of the people sleeping rough in the city have refused offers of housing or other support.
