His full name was Frank Lynn Reed, but most everybody referred to him simply as Sarge or Coach.

“I always knew who knew dad and who didn’t,” said Jon Reed, his son. “I knew they were family members if they would say, ‘Hey Lynn, how are ya?’ because nobody called him Lynn.

“A few people at the school and in politics would call him Frank, but you know mainly that was reserved for my mom [Bobbie]. Everybody else called him Sarge. Now, my friends were terrified of him, so they’d call him Coach Reed or Mr. Reed.”

There was also a familiar moniker Reed used when addressing his players, whether it was the starting senior quarterback or third-string freshman safety.
