SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Friday marks 50 years since one of the most notorious events in Sacramento's history.

On Sept. 5, 1975, President Gerald Ford nearly became the victim of an assassination.

Ford's visit was part of a two-day trip to the West Coast. He had spent 16 hours that day meeting with government officials and business leaders.

The president then wanted to meet with the people of Sacramento, but that decision almost cost him his life.

He was walking with Californians on the way to the State Capitol when Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme pointed a gun at the president.

Secret Service agents were able to grab the gun from Fromme and arrest her. Meanwhile, Ford was quickly whisked away to the Capitol.

Fromme was a disciple of the notorious Charles Manson .

She was sentenced to life
