Colorado Springs Utilities is nearing the halfway mark of a four-year construction project dramatically expanding a power station in the southeast section of the city.

The roughly $130 million project will more than double the size of Kelker substation, along with modernizing the equipment to handle major power demands well into the future.

Utilities started construction on the expanded station in 2023, located near South Academy Boulevard and Hancock Expressway. On Thursday morning, Utilities crews were custom-fitting pipes and wiring to some of the new towers.
