When the Buffalo Bills selected Jim Kelly with the 14th pick in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft, he wasn’t exactly jumping for joy. In fact, as soon as commissioner Pete Rozelle announced the pick, Kelly moaned, “No” as he dropped his chin to his chest.

It’s funny because the Bills weren’t a bad team at that time. They’d made the playoffs in 1980 and 1981 and then missed out in the strike-shortened season in 1982, but they still had a decent enough roster and with veteran Joe Ferguson aging out, they just needed a quarterback to get them back into contention, and Kelly was their man.
