In a democracy, it is healthy and necessary to have open debate about what we do as a country. Do we send aid to foreign countries? Do we open our country to more immigrants? Do we pay for health care for our citizens or even our poor? Do noncitizens deserve the same rights as we citizens? None of these are “slam dunk” yes or no, just because we are the wealthiest country and democracy the world has ever known.

However, if the answer to all or any of those questions above is a definitive “no,” then what we cannot dare to do is call ourselves a Christian nation. As a lifelong Christian, this seems pretty obvious.
