For a long time, I called Democrats a coalition of “not those guys,” with “those guys” being the GOP. Very different people all rowed together to champion the working class and marginalized Americans. Democrats cared about regulations to prevent harm, human rights, bodily autonomy, and getting everyone to pay their fair share into a system that benefitted us all.
Idealistic? Perhaps. But working toward a never-completely-realizable dream was better than the survival-of-the-fittest nihilism of deregulation and corporate greed that marked those guys.
But given the diversity of opinion in a coalition of “not those guys,” no one was ever going to perfectly pass anyone else’s examination of ideology. We were never going to row together about everything.
