HADDONFIELD — In these days of players wanting instant gratification and playing time, St. Augustine junior running back Roman Coney is a study of perseverance.
Last season he could have been the No. 1 back on several teams, but he was behind Julian Turney, now at Navy. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Coney was impressive last year, rushing for 334 yards (4.9 avg.) and four touchdowns as Turney’s understudy.
Now he is clearly the main man, something that has been emphatically proven after just two games.
Coney continued his quick start by rushing for 180 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries as St. Augustine defeated host Paul VI, 26-0 in an interdivisional West Jersey Football League game between two South Jersey Top 10 teams. Jayden Robinson scored the final touchdown on a three-yard run.
