NY bill seeks extra state funding for schools facing influx of migrant students

ALBANY, N.Y. – New York school districts that have taken in large numbers of migrant students would be reimbursed for added costs under a new bill introduced in the Assembly.

Assembly Bill A01041, sponsored by Assemblymember Marianne Buttenschon, would amend the state’s education law to provide supplemental reimbursement to districts for “actual expenses” tied to the arrival of migrant students.

Under the proposal, the governor would be required to submit chapter amendments to the Aid to Localities budget within 30 days of the start of the school year to ensure funding covers those expenses. Districts would then be able to claim reimbursements by submitting certified vouchers detailing the costs.
