John White, 39, the second cook on the steamer Octorara, was shot in the knee when a gun owned by a 15-year-old pantry boy accidentally went off while the ship was leaving port in Duluth. White, who is recovering in a Duluth hospital, said it was an accident, but the boy is reportedly being held under guard aboard the ship.
