So here we are: Father’s Day. And if you’re a dad, maybe you’re reading this after breakfast in bed . . . which is always a nice idea but never quite turns out how you’d imagined.

And after the dodgy wrapping paper and the ubiquitous socks-and-undies combo, maybe you’re one of the lucky ones who also gets a thoughtful surprise — something that actually says, “we see you, we know you, thanks for everything”.

Either way, today’s a good excuse to sit for a moment and reflect on the role dads play in modern society: often quietly, often in the background, but always there.

Because while gifts are nice, the real thing that matters is being recognised on at least one day of the year (the same goes for mothers on Mother’s Day, by the way).
