Frustrated residents are campaigning to save three trees which are being cut down as part of improvement works to a community green space.

Gravesham council has permission to fell the horse chestnuts in the upper area of St Andrew’s Gardens, in Gravesend town centre.

A spokesman explained that a condition survey of the trees on the site was conducted, which was reviewed by two independent tree surgeons, ahead of the first phase of works.

He said experts found that two of the horse chestnuts were in decline due to “overcrowding”, while a third had canopy growth weighted towards Royal Pier Road, presenting a danger if a branch fell.

Therefore, the council was advised to remove the three trees and professionally pollard the remaining plants.
