A rising tennis star from Coral Springs is calling on the South Florida community for support as she competes for a national youth athlete award.

“I thought I was good at tennis, but apparently I’ve been playing in the wrong age group!” said 12-year-old Skyelyn Johnson, who has been playing for around three and a half years.

She’s training hard and setting ambitious goals. “I have a goal in mind, and I’m going to work as hard as I can until I get there,” she said.

Skyelyn trains twice a day, two hours each session, five days a week. “Right now I’m doing 14-unders, 16-unders and I like it because it gives me a challenge,” she said.

Her dedication is paying off. The winner of the country’s Youth Athlete of the Year competition receives $25,000 and a feature in Sports Illustrated.
