The Charlotte man who fatally stabbed a woman aboard the city’s light rail system has been charged with a federal crime punishable by death, a federal prosecutor announced on Tuesday.
Decarlos Dejuan Brown Jr., 34, was already charged by the state with first-degree murder for the Aug. 22 killing of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian who came to the United States to escape war in her home country.
The federal charges, announced by Russ Ferguson, the U.S. attorney for the Western District of North Carolina, are in addition to the state’s plan to prosecute Brown, who was said to be homeless with a mental condition.
The federal charge, one count of committing an act causing death on a mass transportation system, comes as President Donald J. Trump has increasingly used federal resources, including
