About 300 residents are facing a nervous wait as fire threatens a major remote community in WA's far north.

The emergency warning was issued for Mowanjum, about 2,200 kilometres north of Perth, just after 9am on Wednesday.

A number of homes in the settlement are under threat, with firefighters working to protect them.

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) said the fire started on a neighbouring pastoral station and was first reported about 3pm on Monday.

Kimberley DFES Superintendent Glenn Hall said the bushfire, which had impacted evacuation routes, remained "out of control and unpredictable".

"All of our resources are committed," Mr Hall said.

"I've got all the crews I can conducting asset protection at the moment to protect structures."
