Kai Archer is a year behind where he is meant to be developmentally, but is just grateful to be alive.

The almost 18-year-old suffers from memory loss and is still recovering from a brain injury sustained when he was on his way to school one morning, almost two years ago.

It means Kai still hasn't got a driver's licence, which is holding him back from starting his plumbing apprenticeship.

Kai was jaywalking, and said if he had walked five minutes up the road and crossed at the traffic lights, his injuries would have been prevented.

The then Urrbrae High School student was running across a busy road when he collided into the side of a vehicle travelling at 60 kilometres per hour.

Kai said he "rebounded" off the vehicle
